Thank you, Nick. Wish you were able to candidate for governor! To that end, please consider mentioning Oregon's own Medical Teams International! Hope to see you in the governor's chair one day! (Oregon native, SE Portland boy, Protestant pastor in Lake Oswego)
Thanks for the tips. For now I'm giving to World Central Kitchen which is organizing meals and drinks inside Ukraine and just outside the borders at border crossings. They partner with local restaurants and focus on feeding those at temporary shelters in places like Lviv until they figure out where to go next.
Thanks for mentioning the rarely heard disaster in Yemen where the situation is even worse than in Ukraine. As in Ukraine a despot next door in Saudi launched an attack on Yemen in order to install a puppet government. From the beginning 7 years ago, attacks have targeted hospitals, residential areas, marketplaces, water treatment facilities, and critical infrastructure, even bombing a school bus and killing all 47 children onboard. However, more cruel than in Ukraine, the Saudis have set up a complete blockade around the country (air, land and sea) to prevent food, fuel and medicine from reaching the starving people of Yemen. Why don’t we put sanctions on Saudi and embargo Saudi oil? And why do we continue to materially support Saudi in this criminal war?
Thank you for these recommendations. We are monthly supporters of both Doctors Without Borders and Save the Children—the former group appears to spend less on fundraising, so we’ll be sending an extra donation to Doctors Without Borders. Thank you also for pointing out that while we are all beyond horrified at what is happening in Ukraine, humanity in Tigray, Afghanistan, and Yemen must not be forgotten.
I think one of the absolutely most important things is to help the Russian people actually get a clear and true picture (literally including pictures) of what their leadership has been perpetrating. A war is a war. An invasion likewise. And innocents are dying, often gruesomely. They need information to disabuse them of the line being fed them by the Kremlin.
The effort that Dale Perry of Bainbridge Island heads up is getting emergency supplies across the border and into Ukraine. He has put in about $1M of his own money and has enlisted help from his partner and some of their employees in Ukraine. He been interviewed by KUOW and other radio and TV stations in Seattle as well as written up in the Seattle Times.
Humanity & Inclusion US, formerly named Handicap International, is also on the ground in Ukraine and is working in neighboring countries. "We alongside people with disabilities and vulnerable populations, are taking action and bearing witness in order to respond to their essential needs, improve their living conditions and promote respect for their dignity and fundamental rights."
"More than 2.7 million people—including 164,000 children—in #Ukraine have some kind of disability. At least 2 million people are living with chronic health conditions, and some depend on special medications to survive. Nearly 25% of Ukraine's population is 60 or older, many of whom do not want to leave their homes.
It can take around 60 hours for individuals to leave Ukraine right now, often in the freezing cold and without shelter. This journey could be even longer for someone with mobility limitations, and particularly dangerous for individuals with fragile health conditions.
Left behind, these populations will soon lack access to food and medicine, and remain exposed to the dangers of bombing and shelling around them.
As an expert in inclusive humanitarian action, our response in Ukraine and neighboring countries is tailored to the needs of people with disabilities, aging individuals, and others requiring specific assistance. Thanks to our donors, we will deliver rehabilitation care, medical equipment and mental health support to the people who need it most."
Also, Nick, in following you, I know that you're a huge animal person and have probably been following some of the stories about people fleeing Ukraine with their beloved pets. There are also those brave people choosing to stay in places like Kyiv to take care of the animals that people have had to leave behind.
I always appreciate the organizations you have suggested over the years such as the Fistula Foundation and the Himalayan is Cataract Project! Do you know if Partners in Health, Church World Service and Mercy Corp are working in Ukraine, or just in Poland helping refugees.
Greetings to my saint brother. This is Chars widowed husband. Just wanted to say I love you all and I am ready to fight fly for you again. Please contact me at gpay9924@gmail.com or 14029020137
Why no local NGOs? MSF, IMC and StC will funnel through a US HQ, instead of directly into Ukraine, like with voices.org/ua. Proliska.org, and many others.

Thank you for reminding us that people who don’t look like us still need help.
Good luck as you process your future. Your voice is so important in these crazy times.

Here's an article about another very worthwhile humanitarian effort to help the Ukrainians directly. https://replica.seattletimes.com/popovers/dynamic_article_popover.aspx?artguid=42bff814-7125-4e85-9b84-77d2fb76d3a3
