I’m sorry some busybodies decided you couldn't run for office. I respect you, love your writing.

Laurel, it wasn't "some busybodies." It was the Oregon State Constitution, the secretary of state and the Oregon Supreme Court. He had not, in their review, established residency in Oregon. Period.

Once I sent that, I knew “busybodies@ was the wrong word. But thank you for seeing me straight. 😜

True. He got bad advice from his lawyers.

Whether you're a fan of his is irrelevant to the election laws of Oregon. I like his work too, but the law is the law.

All countries who depend on fossil fuels are vulnerable. Trump made this possible.

Yes, impossible not to hear the historic echoes when Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 under the guise of protecting the German speaking population there. I'm sure this will move quickly.....what will happen if the Ukrainian troops retreat into Poland? In Putin's speech at 3 am he reminded the "West" of the huge Russian nuclear arsenal. His rantings do seem more untethered than usual.

Echoes of Hitler's declaration that when he took over Austria and no one spoke up and then he started taking out chunks of Czechoslovakia and no one spoke up . . . So he was confident that no one would speak up if he took over Poland, and ultimately, the Soviet Union. Ironically evocative of Pastor Martin Niemöller's, "First they came for the communists . . ."

As is happening now, I'm sure many countries "strongly objected". The rhetoric of which made how much difference ?

Xi inparticular, but also Putin have access to technology that makes resistance by individuals suicidal for themselves and those they love. Please focus your profound experiences towards how we may heal democracy and human rights everywhere. Like coronovirus, we are all very interdependent now.

Thank you,

Thanks so much for sharing your perspectives on what is now happening with a nation of your heritage. I find them useful and somewhat hopeful.

Many intellectuals have questioned the continuation of NATO, out of date, time to dump it and the Marshal Plan ... but with this action, Eastern European states are going to demand some sort of protection. A backlash indeed.

I’m so glad you took up pen tonight. Thank you for the history. This is terrible and I fear the worst and pray for the best.

Let us hope you are right. I fear that the reaction from the Nato states will be indecisive and too little, too late. Already there is weak talk of "gradually reducing" Russia's economy. That will simply make the average man in the street poorer and more likely to support a president touting conspiracy theories about the West undermining Russia's position, rather than less. The oligarchs supporting Putin have all gotten their riches stashed safely away in more comfortable countries. The U.K. government has much to answer for in permitting Russian money to be washed and to permeate the world financial markets through the City. They will be afraid of a backlash if that gets messed with. My heart goes out to the Ukrainians (and whoever will be next on the list) who were working towards a more open society.

I am writing to draw your attention to the Vice-President of Sudan Mr. Deglo (who is also a militia leader) who is currently visiting Russia as it invade Ukraine. USA must stand with the people of Sudan and help get rid of Mr. Deglo, otherwise Russia will take over Sudan and does exactly what it did in Syria. If Russia is allowed to bully the world like this, we will no longer enjoy the post WWII peace.

Thank you for a concise history lesson. As I have been telling my friends if we don't study history and learn from it we are destined to repeat the same mistakes. Putin is taking the majority of his playbook from Hitler's advances that caused WWII.

I really wonder if there is anything we can do to support and help people in Ukraine, however small it is.
